Carolynn Andersen’s grandfather, Clyde Brewer, came to Cedaredge in 1904 to manage the Surface Creek Champion for publisher C. T. Rawalt. Brewer purchased the newspaper in May 1905 to become both publisher and editor. The Champion provided more than news: it traced and documented the everyday lives of the residents of this valley, it promoted the valley to the outside world as a good place to live or visit, and it documented a period of our local history that would have otherwise disappeared. The Champion tells the stories of the people who shaped this valley from July 1904 until July 1943 when the subscription list was sold to the Delta County Independent. Events from this time include the day in 1907 when about 200 residents voted to make Cedaredge the first incorporated town in the Valley, both World Wars, the Great Depression, births, marriages, deaths, bridge parties, dances and much more.
