Pioneer Town Talks - First Settlers: The Peterson Family

Thursday, July 9, 2020

Cedaredge Native, Buckley Peterson’s great grandparents, Otto August and Martha Jane Peterson, was among the first settlers in the Surface Creek Valley. We have them to thank for building the little cabin that now sits at Pioneer Town. Otto was just a small child when he immigrated to the US from Denmark. His arrival in the Utah Territory is recorded for 1856 when he was only 2 years old. Peterson and his family contributed greatly to the development of the valley, and Buckley has a lot of stories to tell. Otto & Martha Jane’s daughter, Evie, was the first pioneer baby born north of the Gunnison River. Otto Sr was the first in the valley to plant an orchard. It did well enough that soon lots of other settlers were planting trees too. When he returned home from WW1, Otto Jr became Game Warden for Colorado and helped to put a lot of bad poachers in jail. Join us to learn more about the Peterson legacy, live from the old Peterson Cabin!
